For the purposes of this debate, John Trengove both wrote and directed the 2017 movie, Inxeba (The Wound) The film portrays the Xhosa initiation ritual, Ulwaluko, which is a deeply private and sacred tradition. As well as, the film depicted a same-sex relationship within the context of the initiation ceremony. The film had limited box office success, some critical acclaim and severe backlash. Steven von Trier, an accomplished director, had in 2017 offered John Trengove a significantly more substantial amount of money to use the script. Steven von Trier would produce the film and filter the controversial scenes. John Trengove, will still be credited as the writer.

“Social Disgust” describes the concept of collective display of disgust, towards artistic expression and opinions from society. The situations most likely to provoke disgust are those that break taboos surrounding death, religion and sexual norms.

For the purposes of this debate; in many developing states where the violent crime rate is exceptionally high; a social media trend has started where citizens who are not part of law enforcement are becoming “Batman”. As “Batman”, the citizens can be hired by their communities to carry out extra-judicial law enforcement. Police forces usually are not present in these areas or turn a blind eye to “Batman's” actions.
